More About youth

Like the loons, other waterfowl gradually morph into adults. The Pied-billed Grebes are wonderful to follow over the summer months. Once again we have a bird with seemingly wild plumage while young. But when you see them in their natural habitat – if you can see them – the colours provide them with perfect camouflage. I spent a lot of time trying to find the young when they were on the nest.

When in open water they were more visible but the combination of bright sunlight, reeds and rippling water still made them hard to see from the distance.

The parents are kept busy during this time catching fish and shellfish for the little ones.

And then they are adults – all in a matter of a couple of months.
