This post I thought I’d show you some winter scenes. Up at our end of Kootenay Lake, the highway follows along the shoreline. This is mainly because there is a long bluff on the other side of the road. When they put the road through in the 60’s they had no choice (they still don’t). And during the winter months snow pack builds up on the bluffs causing some natural snow slides or avalanches. These can cover the highway, blocking traffic getting to the communities north of the lake.
So every so often, highways brings in a helicopter to blast off the snow and prevent uncontrolled slides. Often these slides block the road, resulting in road closures for up to a day, completely closed and a couple of days down to one lane.
So here are a couple of shots of the last controlled effort.
