How Many Times

Today’s poetry assignment had the theme ‘Fog’ in the form of an elegy, using metaphor. The loss of someone to dementia is very hard. Their fog is painful to see.

She stands in the middle of the hallway,
Arms outstretched, smile lights up her face
‘Looks who’s here’, she cries as for a long lost friend.
How many times do you say goodbye, even
When saying hello?

A brief moment here, then a cloud of doubt.
A hesitant step, where is she going?
A restless hand, a questioning look
Who are you and Why am I here?
How many times do you say goodbye, even
When saying hello?

A faraway look, a puzzled glance,
Burdened with memories unclear.
Set adrift in the fog of unfamiliar ways,
Looking for buoys in some safe harbour.
How many times will you say goodbye, even
When saying hello?

As you turn to go, one last look back.
She stands in the middle of the hallway.
The fears and distress
Of an frightening world hold her
Down, hold her still in her place.
How many times will you say goodbye
Before she is there no more?

  3. Beautiful write up and I do relate well to it.
Indeed it is hard to lose someone to dementia
And not many understand how to support them.
I feel sad when they are prescribed antipsychotics when they are in the ‘foggy confused’ state cos i think it does more harm than good.medication should not be the first line of intervention.
I am so happy for organisations like dementia friends creating more awareness and support for people living with dementia.
